In the southeast of the Lusatian Lake District lies the municipality of Lohsa. Former coal mines, now all lakes, and historic ponds shape the landscape. In the historic centre of the German-Sorbian settlement, the Zejler-Smoler-Haus can be found. Here a first-rate and appealing exhibition provides information on the century-old history of the place and its people. Opposite this, stands the memorial to Handrij Zejler, the great Sorbian poet and thinker. The church in Lohsa and its encircling wall were built with local bog iron ore stones. A raw material, the mining and smelting of which dominated Lusatia before the era of coal.
Dreiweiberner See has been a popular bathing area since 2005. The lake measures just over 1 square mile (2.9 km2) and lies immediately to the north of the state road 108 from Hoyerswerda in the direction of Niesky. Two beaches below the Lohsa Glass Pyramid and near Weißkollm welcome bathers. The beach at Weißkollm is home to a caravan park. From here, nature and water sports enthusiasts enjoy an unobstructed view of the lake. With its excellent water quality and its wealth of fish species, Dreiweiberner See is a tip for all anglers.
The lake originates from the Dreiweibern opencast mine. From 1984 to 1989, about 14 million metric tons of coal were extracted from this pit. Two farmsteads of the Sorbian village Dreiweibern had to make way for the mine. Flooding of the remaining pit began in 1996 and was completed in 2002. The integration of the reclaimed landscape of the open-cast mine Lohsa II into the biosphere reserve Oberlausitzer Heide und Teichlandschaft (Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) is unique.
The glass pyramid on Lohsaer beach is well worth a visit. A themed café invites you to stay a while, and a wooden pirate ship waits to be conquered.
Those wishing to be active at Dreiweiberner See can explore a nearly 5 mile (8 km) long, fully tarmacked circular path. The route is ideal for family cycling excursions, hiking and skating.
And those who are after a faster driving experience can visit the go-kart track in Lohsa.
